Don’t Make Sense

Another school shooting

Too close to home —

Four dead, plus a math teacher hero.

Our kid carries on.

The memory’s buried beside

His friends and math tutor.

Again, a school shooting

this time far from our home —

Six dead, plus the troubled assailant.

Our kid cannot speak,

He cowers, creeps, and carries the memories

In the deepest place of his backpack.

An actual shooting, or the story of one

Are the same — no matter the toll.

Our kid keeps it all close—

Feelings are deep in his bones,

He can’t shed them.
