Hot Smells

In the haze of the morning

Between sleep and awake

Eyes slowly open

There is a turn —

Not to a footfall, but

To a scent.

What does hot smell like?

What does hot smell like —

Inside your head?

Hot smells like smoke.

Hot smells like anger.

Hot smells like fear.

Hot smells like war.
